Description

I went out canoeing yesterday in the hopes of photographing some turtles (my favourite animal), but alas, I never saw any -- just some bullfrogs.

Anyway, after cleaning up, I was walking around the yard when I saw this critter slither under a small rock. I flipped over the rock, it posed for a few shots, and then took off. I'm guessing, but I think it was probably about 14 - 16 inches (35 - 40 cm) in length.

This photo was captured with a Nikon D70 (1/20s @ f/16, ISO 200, FL 70.0 mm) and a set of Hoya diopters/close-up lenses.

They never pose for me :(

Beautiful 'shade and light' shot. I wonder about the aperture/shutter speed you chose. On my screen looks like it could be slightly sharper, and I could use a little lower angle, but no complains really. Snakes are difficult, and this is a very good shot altogether.

@Roadrunner: All fair comments, but just so you know, this was shot hand-held, so f/16 @ 1/20s was as slow as I could get away with (especially at 70mm). Also, because the snake was beneath ground level (under the rock), this was the lowest angle I could get -- the camera lens was actually touching the ground (which also helped to stabilize the camera).

I understand, I was just wondering why so slow? :)

Anyway, to get such sharpness with such a speed - amazing!

Very live colours! Both bold and dramatic. I still can't fathom how you were able to take a brilliant photo in such quick haste. My first instinct when I see any snake is to run away :)

I like the lighting of this photo. I think it's a bit tight on the left side. A little more room in front of him would make him happier.

This is a gr8 shot !! I like the movement U have got because of the 1/20.. probably is a blessing in disguise..... it gives U the feeling of the way snake moves.....
Composition flows very well..But tend to agree with Michelle about slightly more room at the left.. Oh yeah & gr8 job with the light ....
Top marks!!!
